It’s the bestttt
Everything feels right about this film, all the certain comedy, the acting and the storyline is just nicely done.
@LukeArtYT I’m done with subs I don’t take me any different because I have much more personality.
@Devon Krishnaswami The reason doing the same thing again in a sequel is not funny is because it gets boring to see something old done over and over again. Was the first one good yes. Because it was the OG but in 2021 it feels outdated. And Doug made some good points about how the comedy is dry and the “bastard son” was poorly developed. Your problem is that you cannot let go of your opinion and listen to others and instead trying to make someone feel bad for having a different one. And WOW 16 subscribers and you try to run it as if it had a million. CONGRATS Lol
@Haruto Morty Yes yes yes
Honestly, I would have liked to see Imani, the rejected bride from the first film, overthrow the kingdom in a coup d'etat.
Just saw it few days ago. I will be blunt. TOTAL SHIT. As much as I love the original I despise this movie. Cant believe they half-assed it so much. Design yes, nice, but that´s all. A piece of shit in pretty wrapping.
You get it. This movie was TRASH and also to add the feminism was terrible
All the guest stars in the movie acted as if they were begged to do the movie aside the continuous SJW narratives they try to push, the movie is a total crap. The costume is the only good thing about the movie.
Coming to America is a comedy coming 2 America is a family movie
Should have just called it Coming to Zamunda
I did the exact sane thing Doug, I kept checking how long I got left of the flop. Why is it that flops tend to be longer movies? Is that on purpose, to make us more mad? 🤬
More like coming to next dooria
Eddie Murphy wasn’t even really in it!
I thought it was a great movie. Not the original but good film in its own right. I love how they compare the times from 30 years ago and attempt to give this mix of Black American and African culture throughout the film. I think this film will become more appreciated with time. Great job Edddie. 4 STARS
Could you please address the fact that Ethiopian traditional clothes, various types of authentic Ethiopian church crosses and the Ethiopian alphabet was used throughout the movie - everything written in this movie that's not English, is amharic (an Ethiopian language) All the reviews I see talk about costume design and designers when they've directly taken so many original things without even modifying them. And then they talk about designs taken from Nigeria and India but no one says anything about Ethiopia???!!! Why is it they don't want to give Ethiopia the credit she deserves? I've even not seen any credit to Ethiopia at the end of the movie when so many things were blatantly shown throughout the movie. I think it's a shame and the movie makers should be sued for theft and plagiarism!
The first film made me feel something. This made me laugh, but lacked emotional pull. It was great to see James Earl Jones get one hex of a tribute as King. This would have worked out better if it Semmi had turned out to be the father instead. It was great to see Louie Anderson again too.
I told you this plot was shit.
Dude, say it with me: "whitening strips". Yeah, but I can see all your front teeth all the time.
I think people had major nostalgia hard-ons for the first one. The reviews are mostly abysmal, with a few people saying "It was entertaining and harmless" The bad reviews use a lot of colorful language to say "bad" but no clear examples as to why. Declaring humor flat and lifeless means nothing if you don't have examples. This just made me realize most people who hated it didn't have concrete reasons to. Which, to each their own, but man nostalgia is a hell of a drug. I think people also just like to hate things. There also a lot of sexist vocal wankers who thought the movie was "feminist" because women in any sort of power makes their peepees feel small. Yet those same people don't call it out when it is actually driving home "girl power" to the point of being it's own parody, like how atrocious and sexist the newest Mulan was. As someone who watched both movies in two days, I had no nostalgia to the first. I'd seen Trading Places and appreciated the cameo by the Duke and Duke brothers. That was fun. I thought the second was better. It was more fun and light hearted. I also was wondering how in the heck they'd make a sequel, which honestly they were working with very little. This whole movie felt like a fun passion project, Eddie and Arsenio wanting to have fun reprising silly roles, some of which were really impressive as I didn't recognize either of them with certain characters and also wanting to have some fun nostalgia by bringing back basically anyone they could think of. Both movies are predictable, but that's kind of the charm of 80's esque films. I was also insanely surprised at Eddie Murphy doing the old Jewish white guy when I found out after watching the first. I recognized him in some other things, but never in a million years would of guessed that. I was glad there was very little toilet and gross out humor. The farting lion and circumcision jokes were it, and one was played for laughs in the movie itself. I also liked the whole "sequels no one asked for or wanted" knowing joke. It was a fine movie. Nothing egregious, enjoyable for a view. The first one ended so bizarrely. She says no, he goes back to Zamunda, and then she appears. No scenes that show the dad or mom talking to her to surprise Akeem, just a straight cut to her being there. It's almost like they lost the footage or something to connect the dots. Sure, the audience can understand, but it was just a weird way to do it.
Not everybody I know for me my love for the first coming to America has been the same ever since I first saw it Wayback in the day. You could tell they really put a lot into the first one because not only was it funny but it was overall a pretty interesting movie and kept you watching whereas the Second one was one giant call back fest to the first film. It was funny at times but that’s it.
So its ok in 2021 to joke about a man being drugged and raped?
Dude, the SNL 'Naked and afraid' skit with Leslie Jones and Peter Dinklage is freaking gold. She can be funny in the right role.
I just rewatched that! Thank you for reminding me!
I just needed soul glo guy, wtf!? LOL
I appreciate that it wasn’t a COMPLETE retread of the original. Still no where near the first, and still repeats a lot of similar ideas, but it at least TRIED to go in a different direction.
For me the movie was over when Leslie Jones showed up and.. well the movie starts being bad SNL content...
The best joke was Pepsi being the official McDowell’s drink.
I kinda liked it
shitty movie
I was disappointed that this wasn't more about Prince akeem and his daughters. His American son and their family were really really annoying. I absolutely loved Wesley Snipes' over the top character though. He certainly loves to chew the scenery. At the end of the day though, it was hard to admit to myself that I absolutely did not like the movie.. and I was really looking forward to it and wanted more from it.
If it weren't for Wesley's character I would've blew my brains out halfway through the movie, but he made it possible for me to bear it until the end.
General Izzi's walk was the best thing about this movie
Woke humor is not funny. You can’t offend anyone anymore so what your left with is awkward attempts at lame jokes by people who if you allowed them to just be themselves without fear of being canceled would be hilarious. Welcome to the new funny.
it's good to see eddie murphy back and on top but this movie is a flop that fell over and end that high..
This movie was a great set up for a third movie about the oldest daughter that could have a more focused storyline to me this movie was just a nostalgia filled commercial for an eventual part 3
The 80 humour was in a time where everything was less offensive....
It was fun to see John Legend singing She's Your Queen, but I guess they couldn't work him into the actual film? Also, why did they wait until almost the end of the movie to acknowledge the passing of Akeem's mother the Queen?
Movie sux not worth watching it. It's not funny
How does he not remember Zamunda?? They say it a million times in both movies.
Movie sucked
test
I really prefer these kind of reviews. Thanks. No sketches. Just Doug talking about movies.
I didnt hate the movie, but I didnt love it like I did the original. The characters personalities changed too much from how they were originally. Murphy lost all his values, and his wife was just flat till she got drunk. Sorry, this is not how I would have seen the characters mature. I could see the king and queen fighting constantly, even the most mundane issues blown up behind closed doors. But no, she became meek and quiet. Also, yeah, I noticed the same thing with the bastard son changing personalities almost instantly. Would have been better if he got spoiled while there, and akeem had to bring him back to earth. Also, really? No paternity tests? Just one "yeah, you could be his dad, yep, you are his dad" and its done. Sorry, should have been a whole thing about that. The writers were lazy. Could have been much much better and more heartfelt, like eddie grew to care for the bastard, and really liked him and acted like a father, but found out that he wasnt the father, but took him on as a son anyways because he began to care for him. That would have made for a more compelling story than what we got.
Just watched and while I wouldn't call it an awful movie, I think it earns Arin "Egoraptor" Hanson's label of *"Ungraceful Sequel"* Like Doug said, a lot of characters are just not who they were at the end of the first movie, with no real explanation on why they changed. The movie also gets real close of beating you over the head with what I like to call "political sofactivism", calling sexism here, there and everywhere a handful of times. Nonetheless, it was fun seeing all of those callbacks, like the barbershop guys and even the terrible church priest and singer. Seeing all these actors back in their roles, in a age where Hollywood just recasts people like no one's business, also felt pretty wholesome.
Omg! Everyone says this movie was bad so glad I was already in the frame of mind not to watch!
The Kardashian joke was in response to something Akeem had just said.
I'm sorry Doug, I'm usually heavily against the accusation of "not getting it" but you didn't get this film! The whole point of this film is that it's a THROWBACK! It's literally a spot on 80s sequel to the original film, just made 30+ years later! Your complaint against Nexdoria - I hate to tell you this but that was the name of the neighbouring country in the original film! I'm not even a fan of the original film but I rated this exactly the same as my rating for the original...a 7/10: It does what it says on the tin! Nothing more, nothing less. Honestly - If Coming to America came out today rather than almost 40 years ago you would have the exact same complaints :) You can't judge this film by today's comedic standards {comedy has changed massively and not at all for the better!} - It's pure Nostalgia, Judge it by the standards of the 80s.
The only issue I have with the movie is perhaps the colorism issue Murphy always tends to make it seem as if the dark-skinned characters either promiscuous or stupid and the fair skinned character dignified he even made one of his daughter characters seem a little bit too masculine Not to mention akeem being sexually exploited and drugged and being laughed at
Man I criticize this movie Man it felt water down I don't like that and cheap I give it like two stars that's my grade
It was worth the watch just to see how much fun Snipes was having as the cartoonish heavy. That strut!
They had how many years to get it rigth?
Mmmmm A mí me gustó mucho La película se reía de si misma
Let me do you a favor. Skip this movie. A few laughs, great choreographies, costumes and hairstyling. Arsenio looks ashen. CTA did help me fall asleep fast. 🥴😶😴
I liked it. Is it as good as the original? No, of course not, but that's rare when it comes to sequels
"Nexdoria" sounds like something you would write.
The whole movie should be based on America the way people from other countries see it Like taxes what's that I made 1000 dollars and only got 6 💀 Child support tf💀 Everything I thought was real fake.... the end.
i walked out of Nutty Professor 2. that was the last Eddie Murphy movie i saw.
Great review Doug

I’m just gonna pretend this didn’t exist and just rewatch the first one
They should've just gave him a boy along with the girls and call it a day! Boy does what dad did just in a new way No basturd, no bullshit, no feminism, no bad movie
My theory on the amazon prime release is that they saw the final product and realized it would be a potential bomb like Ghostbusters 2016 (Leslie Jones strikes again.) By going the prime route nobody can bitch too much because they probably already had free access. Thing is, when you have a beloved classic that people remember from childhood, you’re going to get hate if you don’t bring your A game and they most certainly didn’t!
They such black diamonds in this world the move just not abut wight cat the move abut saw U the African how we have a such beauty dress ethiopiian cross Naygrian i think thos wight cat very Jules
Hated it
Terrible movie
One thing I found strange about the movie is that the guy that owned and ran the Barber Shop, and his two old friends who were always in there had seemed to have berely aged if at all since the first movie. It's thirty-plus years later and considering they looked to be over sixty back then, all three of them were still alive as well. One of them, yeah ok. Two at a push but all three of them? Did strike me unlikely. Not impossible, just unlikely.
Leslie Jones is just really unfunny
It's just one long SNL skit.
Somewhat unrelated: still think they dropped the ball not naming the 2nd movie Taken Too
To all critics about this movie, what did you expect for 1 and 2 I like it. There are many others who feel the same.
Doug you should do vlogs on Total Drama. It’s a Canadian cartoon that aired on Cartoon Network and was renewed for 2 more seasons a month ago.
What a massive pile of crap. Just awful
In which country of the American continent he is coming?!
Thia guy liked Salt n Peppa lol
it's funnier if you imagine that Doug is talking about Kickassia
Are you going to do a nostalgia critic review of this movie?
The hairdresser character ruined it for me. The prince wanted a wife who had not just do whatever he says. She follows him to America to get married when he doesn't have a job or any way to take care of her without saying a word.
Eddie Murphy said in an interview that Tracy Morgan was until the third draft supposed to be the Son. I think that is part of the reason why the character seems so disjointed. Tracy Morgan could do being Street Smart in America and then stupid in another country
I’m one of those idiots that generally kinda likes most movies, unless they’re really bad. Halfway through this I said out loud “this movie sucks”...
Wesley Snipes gave the best performance, and he wasn't even a returning actor/character. Overall, they over relied on bringing back actors/characters and nostalgia, but forgot to make a movie that holds together on it's own.
I'm suppose to believe Prince Akeem turned down every other women at that night club to have an one night stand with Leslie Jones character. Which goes against his overall demanor from the first film. The premise and execution of this sequel was bad from the start.
@roctv100 just think about the gender would have been reversed and the girl was getting raped Would that be okay for a movie too?
@Hanmacx That's the plot line they use to explain his illegitimate son.
This movie is about a man getting raped against his will And we as audience should accept that?
Is no one gonna mention the incessant and completely disruptive parade of product placement in every other scene? Friskies, Spotify, Lyft, on and on. It felt like half the scenes were written just for the plug. And Last Train To Zamunda is kindergarten wired al parody. This movie had some good ideas for a plot but was just too damned lazy to make the comedy sing.
Are you and Brad brothers?
REVIEW WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S!!
It was garbage. So disappointed. I turned it off when the son started rapping
Todd Phillips, director of JOKER, had said, “Go try to be funny nowadays with this woke culture,” Phillips said. “There were articles written about why comedies don’t work anymore - I’ll tell you why, because all the funny guys are like, ‘F**%#£ this shit, because I don’t want to offend you.’" "It’s hard to argue with 30 million people on Twitter. You just can’t do it, right?" he added. "So you just go, ‘I’m out.’"
No joke, my commercial break right this second was Coming 2 America. I thought this was part of the video. Especially when you were trying to explain how unfunny the movie was.
Movie sucks, Hollywood Lacks originality, stick with the first one, goodbye!
It’s official: I was born at the wrong time.
I have just watched the first 10 minutes, flicked through a little bit for a few clips, and it looks rubbish. I thought the original was great.
I loved the movie not better than the first and it was never going to be. But I thought it was very funny.
Really bad movie .I hate Lesley jones
Coming 2 America felt like a remastered version of the original, Lesley Jones plays the same stereotypical character in every movie.
You pointed out one of the biggest problems I had with this movie: characters’ inconsistencies, especially Akeem. He was the rebel that confronted his father about the old traditions of Zamunda, but in the sequel he respects so much traditions that he doesn’t even allow his first daughter to be his heir, even though, being the king, he could easily cancel the rule about only male heirs.
This movie definitely killed Eddie murphy’s career and arsenio as well
I liked the new Tom and Jerry movie. Way better than this one. I just wished they added more characters from the cartoon into the movie.
Eddie murphy haven't made a good movie since the 1988
I know that this movie didn't really care all that much, but at the start, it states that Akeem was celebrating his 30th anniversary, and also his son was celebrating his 31st birthday. Adding 9 months for birthing period, do you mean to tell me that the first movie took place over the course of almost 2 years??? Because that seems unrealistic.
I couldn't even get through it. It's so bad.
Replying to what Doug said about Leslie Jones has she been in any movies where she was funny?
Imagine if James Earl Jones dies soon... this would be his last movie.
It would be sooo sad.
The movie was packed with super woke, social justice nonsense. What was that barbershop scene where they were talking about Obama being "The Great Uniter," and about how now the Nazis have taken over? *Sigh* ... Give me a break. Modern politics ruins absolutely everything that it's injected into.
4:21 that was a good joke In the movie. Cmon Doug.
The movie was harmless, it doesn't really change anything up and if it never existed the world wouldn't be any better or worse without it. Some of the jokes are kinda stale, nexdoria is a big one, and Leslie Jones is never funny. Being loud isn't humor. The kid doing a complete 180 in character when he arrives at the palace was an issue I had as well, like all of a sudden he's some basic-ass sound cloud rapper wannabe sounding dude the minute he steps into the palace, but when he was in new york he was well articulated and had pretty clear goals of bettering himself and his life. The Make-up effects in this movie were pretty well done though. Like the Baba character took me a minute to tell it was Arsenio, although a joke I made to my friend was that James earl Jones dies, but the old Jewish dude in the barber shop is gonna somehow live? I dunno. it was a chance for the actors to have some fun and if you watch it once it's enough.
It was fun, I liked it:)
Borat 2 did better than Tom and Jerry and coming 2 America didn't watch all of them 10 minutes into turn it off
When the announced this film, I said "Hakeem will have a long lost son or daughter, will have to go back to the US, find his kid, and along with his stereotypical ghetto family, bring them back to Africa. Then the son or daughter will initial rebel, come around, happy ending, roll credits...and that's exactly what happened.
The same guy who came up with "Kickassia" as a name has a problem with "Nextdooria"? That's funny... look inward for lazy writing too there Doug. Don't get me wrong, C2A is abysmal, I get it. But man that's hypocritical as fuck.
