Well first of all, I didn't see the water rising in that one shot you mentioned as I was too focused on Sisu and Raya and I saw it twice in theaters (first in IMAX, then in regular). As for the movie, I thought it was okay. The characters are okay, the story is fine and the animation is nice. I mainly found this movie to be like the other animated Disney films of the past few years, like with Zootopia, Frozen, Ralph Breaks the Internet and Moana. With a story that doesn't have any good surprises or complicated and lackluster moments, characters that have good designs yet have motives that aren't clear or are repetitive of previous characters and animation that's always interesting in one way or another, but is the only saving grace. And Raya and the Last Dragon is one of them. But I did find some stuff to be rather decent outside of the animation. The action looks neat, the comedy ranges from alright and fun to pretty modern and bland, and Sisu the dragon I found to be quite entertaining, even though some of her humor is a little much and is like the Genie from Aladdin, but not as over-the-top and zany. And overall, I don't find this to be one of Disney's best films, nor one of their worst, for an original story at least. But I expected more with this, especially from the first trailer. Yet, the movie's more like the second trailer. Being an unbalanced mix of comedy and drama, nice scenarios, action and one character and a message and story that's okay, but hammered and complex a bit much.

Raya and the last dragon has potential. And it's pretty big. It is a pity that to reveal it, you would have to completely redo everything. And change the format of the cartoon to the series. Female chauvenism clearly stands out on the face. And the approval of theft. This cartoon is good for its atmosphere, you can watch it as a set of clips, but not as a whole. It's a pity.

Personally, as someone from Southeast Asia, this movie meant a lot to us. This is the first time our cultures are represented that much by Hollywood. For the first time we could watch a Disney movie and go "wow these characters look like us", literally. At its core, the project was made by Southeast Asian Americans for Southeast Asian people. For most others it's just another fantasy world, but for us we got the excitement to pick out the small details like the foods, the landscape, the slangs, the costumes... that we grow up with. The trust issue is more than just a reused plotpoint here and it's not something many people can relate if you don't grow up in Southeast Asia or know about our messy history. I agree that it lacks something to become actually great (it should have been a series but oh well we can't have everything), at least I'm glad it's not some cash cow like Mulan (thank goodness). However, to say it's a stepping stone to Frozen is an underappreciation. Frozen has the international appeal of a white pretty queen who has beautiful sparkling magic singing a catchy song. Movies like Coco, Moana or Raya are the efforts to raise awareness of the minorities that have long been underrepresented. Probably Disney just wanna appease different markets, but hey at least there's an attempt at cultural diversity, and we need more of that.

I thought the movie was pretty mediocre all things considered. The cast was just so forgettable to me, like I barely remember any of their names, and the only one I even half-liked was the big warrior guy. The story also wasn't anything special, it really wants to push this message about coming together, but it falls flat on so many occasions. Considering the scope of the plot, this would have worked so much better as a TV show. I will give credit to the animation though, this movie really is stunning to look at sometimes.

Movie was just okay, I can't say I liked it. The plot was messy and rushed and the characters are just not very good people or just not interesting. And the cgi animation was very lacklustre it's feels like it's the same from tangled, frozen, Moana etc. I'm glad we finally got something new with disney but this feels like a let down. I feel like this really deserves a well made TV series above a sequel, to focus more on Namaari's redemption and uprbringing, expand on the idea of trust while also integrating the idea of forgiveness as they expand more on Raya's character and maybe even tackling her trauma. This could work so well considering the world building and the potential the barely explored towns could offer, maybe even introduction to new characters. "Tangled the series" in, my opinion worked really well, and it could have been amazing if it didn't have so many filler episodes, because the main storyline and characters were really investing. I feel like they could take a similar route with Raya, and improve on it. Because Disney is better at making tv shows , than at making sequels and there's just too much to cover and add, even for a second movie. All in all, I feel like Raya was an amazing movie, probably one of my favourites, standing close to Frozen and TLK which are my tops. The funny thing is, I am very invested in the characters, more than I would ussually be after a Disney movie. Raya is actually, a pretty flawed character which is just amazing and more realistic, and they left room for a lot of development in that regard. I'm left with wanting more and, I don't think that's a bad thing. They did a pretty good job for a movie that lasts for like an hour and a half. Also I would like to point out how well Raya and Namaari work toghether, one being the other's foil in a way. I stan their dynamic and I would love to see this develop more in a realistic manner(not that the movie didn't handle them right, but it kinda felt like a beginning rather than a conclusion to their relationship). They could even take a step forward and work on their Lgbtq representation with it. I don't personally agree with the fact that, this should have happened in the movie. I understand where people are coming from but it would have felt rushed. That doesn't mean it can't happen though.

I agree, Doug, the world-building was one of my favorite parts of the movie, too. Just the way the movie took its inspiration from Southeastern Asian countries and infused it all into the DNA of a 100% fictional world was just astounding. And I will admit, while I really cherished its themes of trust and distrust, and the way it was shared through this movie, it was really effective. But what I love about it just as much as the world-building is its applicability to what America's going through right now. As in: Druun (Purple Monsters) = Covid-19 Kumandran Wars = American Political Divides Not to mention that it does so while also spicing it up with some good comedy for good measure. The only other movie I can think of that did that with good results was MASH. It came out in 1970, and it used its story of three men in the Korean War to satirize the travesties of the Vietnam War. But yeah, getting back to Raya, definitely an amazing movie for those reasons. :)

I enjoyed the movie but it’s so rushed. I feel like if they had broken this into more movies it could have been really good, with each movie focusing on one land and really delving into the trust issues or even the dragon magic (one of Sisu’s siblings for each area as well) and providing better humor but because it’s one movie it’s way too fast and it doesn’t give us time to really enjoy what they’re trying to do. Raya’s “mistrust” like Doug said hits kind of hollow, she acts more paranoid than outright mistrustful and it would have been nice to see some situations where her mistrusting someone bit her in the butt more than once. Also, the exposition in the beginning could have been cut since characters have conversations about what happens in the past, this movie explains what happened way too frequently and we really could have just started with Raya trying to sneak in and been fine. The fact that we are never told where Raya was after she got thrown into the water is also kind of weird, I feel like that should have been at least mentioned in convo or we get shown additional instances where she got tricked/betrayed in a montage. I have other complaints but these were the main ones. I still really enjoyed it but they could have done a well developed movie series with this

What I don't get is, couldn't the 'Rain' dragon just make it rain to fend off those creatures. And isn't snow technically water too, so people of Spine should've been safe as well. Or does it have to be the flowing body of water? The movie never specifies this.

I did not want to see this movie at all but I was bored and decided to turn it on and man am I glad I did. I was pleasantly surprised because I also thought (based on trailers) it was going to be the same cookie cutter movie we've been getting lately. Not a perfect movie by any means but I thoroughly enjoyed it and have rewatched it many times already. My only real gripe is that all the characters are well done (the baby still bugs me though) but not always needed. The three she picks up along the way are fantastic but don't do much aside from drive home the idea of unity. I wish they could have done more with them but that's okay. Over all, one of my favorite Disney movies in recent years and that's saying something since I've been somewhat anti-Disney the last 15 years.

I guess that humans had to trust each other too(or at least show 1 example of trust between them to that orb) Dragons showed the trust 500 years ago and it was enough to save humans, so now they have to show they trust each other as well. This is my best guess, but movie never specifies this, so we can only speculate.

My one thing that prevents this movie from becoming great for me is Namaari and the lesson of trust. Spoilers: I understand that Raya needs to learn trust, but it's difficult considering that the first person she did trust outside of Heart proceeded to use her kindness to betray the location of the dragon gem. She willingly goes along with her father's lesson, but Namaari betrays her, and when her father drops his sword to show trust, a Fang member shoots him with a crossbow. And this all happened because Fang took advantage of Heart's hospitality in the first place! Trust is a 2 way street, and it requires that both parties agree to that trust. Heart DID make the first step multiple times, yet they were rejected by Fang. So when Raya again makes the first step and reaches out to Namaari, only for Namaari to take out a crossbow, this should REINFORCE the idea that blind trust is NOT a good idea, yet the film rejects this. Instead, the film has Namaari and Raya SHARE blame, even though Raya is RIGHT not to trust Namaari and should have acted to defend Sisu, because yet again, Namaari has refused that trust. The lesson that we should go along with Sisu and trust even those who wrong us is wrong. What the film should have done is have Namaari APOLOGIZE for her actions, instead of JUST blaming Raya.

Raya wasn't that interesting, and (SPOILER) Sisu was better as a human than a dragon. Only pro things were the animation, voice acting (which was passable IMO), and (SPOILER) Naamari's redemption Overall, not the best Disney movie but not the worst either

Maybe you expected too much out of it and missed the little gems of the film. It happens as a lot of people expected this to be the wake up call for Disney to get back to originality instead of always doing remakes. That and some people went in with the mindset of the representation of the culture. If you just go in with the mindset of someone who wants to watch the movie for what it is, it's about a 7/10 not going to lie as it doesn't fall under disney cliche. Like there's no music or love interest, just a simple movie with some nice animation. Now that may also be why you don't like it as there was no music and you were hoping that it would be like older disney films. Could be a ton of reasons as to why you didn't like it and others didn't.

I think thinking she wouldn't pay the credit back was just you. I completely believed she honestly intended to. I think you just interpreted it based on tropes from other stories instead of what was presented. Nothing suggested she had any desire to trick them. She only got nervious about it after they said: we don't know you, you have no credit here, at which point she was trying to say she'd go find Raya. There was nothing deceptive about her attitude though, I'm sure she thought she'd be able to find a way to pay it back later.

I thought the movie was ok, but it felt like they crammed too much together and didn't take/have the time needed to develop things properly. Like the places, they didn't really explore anything. It was just, instantly be/go where they need to be, grab the gem, the leave for the next place and do it again. Same thing for the characters, Aside from Raya and maybe Namaari, they didn't really develop anyone or give them character arcs or anything. Raya was developed ok, Namaari could have been done better, but the other characters, the kid, the baby, the eye-patch guy, and even the dragon, I felt nothing for them, and didn't feel any real connection or bond of trust between any of them. They were just shoved into their roles and then made like they were as close as Team Avatar or something. Even Namaari's redemption felt unearned, like she was just shoved in there without having earned or developed it. It was like this with all the characters really, there wasn't enough time to develop anything for us to get invested or really feel anything. Personally, I think it would have worked better as a TV series. Then they really would have the time to develop everything properly and I think they could have had something really great. Overall, it was pretty good, but in the end is rather forgettable. It'll never live up to movies like Frozen, Moana, Zootopia, etc, or any of the classics.

Any one else have the thought of My Little Pony and the Hearth's Warming story? You know the winter holiday about how the three different pony's fought and brought forth the cold winter that froze and destroyed the earth and then the three ponies came together, trusting and laughing right before they froze, but then a warm heart was created that melted them. and the storm disappeared because the discourse disappeared.

Still prefer Tangled over Frozen. My major problem that rubbed me the wrong way was how modern the young Raya was. Like everything is very Asian, her father is the same way and reserved, but young Raya and the other girl (who i can't remember the name, her enemy) sounding and acting like modern children using words like "dragon nerd" just really bothered me.

I loved the journey, i HHHHHHATED the message, am i the only one who noticed that the message was horrible and made no sense? MAJOR SPOILERS, i'm serious skip this if you don't want to be spoiled. 1. Dad teached about trust->Screws the whole kingdom and the world with said trust. 2. Sisu teaches about blind trust because of her experience of being trusted blindly->dies because of it. 3. Namaari has the audacity to tell Raya off like she did wrong for doubting, WHEN SHE BETRAYED HER 3 TIMES, Raya attacked because she saw Namaari was PULLING THE TRIGGER. and this was the scene where Raya learned and went "oh maybe Sisu and Dad were right! I should have trusted you!" and gives Namaari all the stones. 4. Namaari LITERALLY TRIED TO BETRAY HER ONE LAST TIME AFTER THIS! she only came back because the world was going to hell so might as well do that leap of faith. 5. Namaari's mom despite her intentions for her people was a full on criminal and villainous till the end, AND SHE GOT AWAY WITH IT, 0 consequences. everyone came back to life, even Sisu, world restored, so the blind trust won because of the happy ending?, THE END DOESN'T JUSTIFY THE MEANS, there's no disney magic in real life, The dad failed, Sisu failed, Namaari failed and her mom is still an asshole, Raya failed the moment she gave the stones to Namaari because again: the end doesn't justify the means, Raya had all the right to not trust her and she still trusted her for no reason. Raya should have convinced Namaari during the final fight, not the other way around. Raya carried the whole story but the story acted like she needed to learn when she was never wrong for doubting.

@Pottle Kat Bro, her signs to change means so little when her actions causes constant UNFORGIVABLE harm when she knows that lives are at stake. And she saved TukTuk because he was carrying 4 of her people, and once again it was only during the moments where things were going to shit in her own city, otherwise she would have continued living on without regret, that's not how you write a character trying to change, even a degenerate pedophile criminal would show signs of change if you threaten to cut off his dick. You know when she should have started to show sign of change? when she met Raya again 6 years later after making her lose her father and dooming her city, but instead of showing any regret or concern for the one she harmed so horribly she just gloated and tried to hunt her down, and she didn't even need the stones at this point because her city was living a paradise, she was just being an asshole. Namaari is the worst written character in this movie.

You acted like Namaari absolutely didn't show a sign of willingness to change, even though she was the one that saved TukTuk AND RAYA SEES IT AND KNOWS IT. Raya wasn't being unreasonable when she put her faith in Namaari, as she herself saw that Namaari can do good, that maybe Sisu was right.

There was so much about this movie I liked, the animation and the world (while established in a lot of shorthand) are great. I didn’t catch on to every character but they were largely above average but I absolutely could not stand like 90% of the dialogue. I’d rather watch this than Frozen 2 but there’s so many others I’d watch instead

I have to disagree with the idea that Raya should've been all the way not trusting and the dragon too trusty like Doug said in the review, because I think that would be too "In your face" and no one is that extreme. Raya has levels in her trust depending on the person or reason... and so is the dragon.

The dragon came up and I was like "Oh no, don't do this the whole movie..." at the beginning, before the movie started, I had told my friend I thought it looked like Moana and How to Train Your Dragon put together. When the Drunn came up, I turned to her and said "Good grief, I was kidding!" I ended up liking it very much though.

Plot was really compelling. Scenery was gorgeous. Animation was stunning (it's crazy how far they have come). The Background Music was the best I've heard in an animated film (rewatch it, it's insane how good it is). Cons: Needed more choreography. Modern slang took me out of it. Too much tell not show. Comedy was a little forced. Ending was rushed (so much potential). Actually I watched a video that explained all of this really well. I'll see if I can find it. (EDIT: found it - amget.info/have/iaeGl61rmoPcX2c/video.html)

This was basically _Legend of Korra._ Everyone is giving _Disney_ props for being "creative" and for the "great world building", but all they basically did was take aspects of _Avatar:_ _The Last Airbender_ (the CARTOON, NOT the live action film) and _The Legend of Korra._ _Disney_ has RARELY been creative enough to create ANYTHING on their own. Literally _every_ blockbuster _Disney_ has had was stolen from ANOTHER property; _The Lion King_ was stolen from Japan's _Kimba:_ _The White Lion,_ the animated version of _Disney's Aladdin_ was stolen from Richard Williams' _The Thief and the Cobbler,_ (Disney headhunted the animators from that film and basically stole large elements of the story. The original script from Aladdin was VERY different from the finished product. This is why Aladdin has a hobb- cobb of cultural elements. Disney mixed Arabic culture with Indian culture. It's why Jasmine actually looks more like an _INDIAN_ princess rather than an Arabic Princess. The original Jasmine was changed to resemble Princess Yum Yum from _Thief and the Cobbler)_ I wish people would be more open about calling out _Disney_ on their crap.

IMHO, this is the sort of movie that would have been better as a series. It just felt like too much world and too many characters to get attached to in an hour and twenty minutes. I really liked a lot of the ideas, but I just didn't know enough about the characters to care. And like you said, the character inconsistency was a little jarring. It didn't feel like the whole "Raya learning to trust people" thing was earned, if that makes sense. It was just like, one minute she trusts no one, and the next she's willing to trust the person who stabbed her in the back at the behest of a dragon. Plus, we didn't get a chance to explore Sisu's insecurities. Her whole introduction is her talking about how she's not that good of a dragon, and we never expanded on that.

what I thought about the movie from an animation student perspective: the basic plotline and worldbuilding is interesting and good, as you say, but MAN is the writing BAD. It's like SO BAD, the pacing of the story is all over the place and only by the end it settles a little, I HATED the characterization of the dragon, the lines they chose to give her and overall this feels like (for the majority) a movie targeted to little kids. God it could have been something great. But it isn't, from a long shot. This feels also like a classic Disney Formula renewed a little. And the baby? wtf?? I'm ramblng a little but that's how little I enjoyed the film, at least the first good half, and the character of the antagonist is written very badly at the beginning, god I don't even know what to say there's so much of it. there are so many basic mistakes in this movie that older Disney wouldn't have made because New Disney doesn't know how to write stories. I have a good theory that during production they panicked because the movie was so long and so complicated that, in an effort to make it shorter and clearer they threw a lot of the scenes out and smushed the rest together. It's a thing that happens all the time during production of movies, it happened for Frozen 2 more recently and I hope, I HOPE it won't happen again. Because I'm tired of seeing Disney not trying, and even when it tries, it fails. I don't trust Disney anymore to make good films.

Ehhh did not care for this movie... it has not one but TWO boring badass female warrior characters (and of course both are non-white). Felt forced. The dragon was nothing more than wacky jokey character, she had no buildup or development or story arc on her own. The world was... rather empty and boring. Visually while it was nice, it felt like a ripoff of Avatar (the show).
